SUMMARY:Circuladium: Rain Catcher
DESCRIPTION:Circuladium: Rain Catcher\nJuly 19 – August 17\, 2024\nGallery Hours: Sat & Sun 1 – 6 pm \nOpening Reception:\nSaturday\, July 19\, 6 – 9pm\nWith performance by Hui-Ying Tsai & Merik Goma\nWorm Charmer is a performance using sensory memories to pave a path of resistance. It activates the body as an instrument\, summoning writhing\, wetness\, and the tremors of subterranean sense. Eroticism emerges as language\, as escape\, as rhythm in contact with the earth. Through sound\, scent\, sweat\, and salt\, artists channel a sacred\, feral intelligence of the flesh within the audience. The performance carves open the gaze\, casting writhing as resistance\, charm as action. From throat to soil\, the ritual is a seepage to unnamed desire and reclaims the body as an extension of the land. \nClosing reception:\nSunday August 17th\, 1pm to 6pm\nCome celebrate the closing of Rain Catcher featuring interactive sculptures by Hui-Ying Tsai and Jonathan Grover.\nThis special event will feature five musical performances where the audience will be encouraged to play alongside musicians via interactive sound sculptures. Using the sculptures sonic palette as a starting point musicians will lead the audience into other sonic realms! \nMusic/Sound Performances by\nPatricio Jijón (Electronics) 2:30pm – 2:45pm\nTrey Cregan (Electronics) 3:15pm – 3:30pm\nZonkey (Electronics) 4:00pm – 4:15pm\nMike Golub (Drums)\, Eric Ebile (Bass)\, Trevor Deke Bajus (Guitar\, Electronics) 5:30pm – 5:45pm\n( ) Parenthesis (Strings\, Electronics) 5:30pm – 5:45pm \nAll set times are tentative. Additional guest musicians may perform with the listed artists.\nThis is a free event\, but donations for the gallery and musicians are encouraged. \nLocation:\nTiger Strikes Asteroid\n1329 Willoughby Ave\, #2A\nBrooklyn\, NY 11237 \nAbout:\nBROOKLYN\, NY – Tiger Strikes Asteroid is pleased to present Rain Catcher\, the first exhibition since 2020 to focus on this collaborative project by Hui- Ying Tsai and Jonathan Grover and the recipient of our 2025 solo exhibition open call. Water\, clay\, seashells\, sand\, and morphing sound are omnipresent materials in these interactive installations that invite viewers to connect with one another across time and space. \n\n\n\n\nIn these works\, the artists reference universal stories and phenomena experienced by many individuals throughout countless cultures. Flood and creation myths are alluded to in the piece Southern Star. Viewers are invited to manipulate ASMR-inducing sound by touching saltwater in the sculptures. These works\, as well as Twins\, invite us to contemplate the many facets of ourselves\, others\, and the networks between us. Mother draws viewers in by activating the wonder one experiences when hearing “the ocean” and “siren” in a conch shell\, and keeps us engaged with an original lullaby of Tsai inspired by her grandmother’s singing in childhood\, thus highlighting the universal qualities of personal histories. In all works\, the relationship one person can feel with another individual when hearing something composed or manipulated by that individual is an enduring theme\, made all the more precious by the ephemeral nature of sound. The piece Southern Star is manifested by the classic elements: earth\, water\, fire\, air – making the work timeless\, as if it’s always been there. In parallel to the ever-circulating elements\, the piece is activated by the viewer’s impermanent presence. The artists ask us to wonder what some early human experiences might have been like\, and still resonate with us today. For Circuladium\, art is a means of transcendence\, a celebration of existence\, and a medium for \n\n\n\n\n\n\npersonal and collective connections. By means of collective connections\, Rain Catcher features a new participatory interactive piece\, Dowsing Stylus\, which explores the subconscious and non-verbal communication between people\, where the viewers search inward and still meet others in a collaborative experience. \nPerformances will take place during the opening and closing receptions of the exhibition. \nCirculadium is a new media art duo based in Brooklyn. It was formed by Hui-Ying Tsai and Jonathan Grover in 2018. Both artists gained their MFA in New Genres and Design and Technology\, respectively\, from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2009. When not working as a duo\, they work independently on diverse subjects and media and collaborate with other artists and professionals. \nHui-Ying Tsai is an internationally active Taiwanese American interdisciplinary artist. Her public collections include the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and the Taitung Art Museum. She is a fellow of MacDowell Colony\, Joan Mitchell Foundation\, MASS MoCA\, Sculpture Space\, Yingge Ceramic Museum\, Anderson Ranch Arts Center\, The Vermont Studio Center\, The Millay Arts\, Red Bull Arts Detroit\, Pier-2 Arts Center\, Cheng Long Wetlands International Art Project\, Red Bull Arts Detroit\, Guandu International Nature Art Residency\, the Antenna: Spillways Residency\, and Fresh Winds Biennale\, Art in Country of Tokyo to name a few. \nJonathan Grover is a burgeoning new media and sound artist renowned for interactive sculptures. Grover secured an MFA grant from the San Francisco Art Institute. His artistic contributions have been featured in Creative Quarterly and The San Francisco Chronicle\, alongside appearances on NBC Bay Area Arts. Presently based in Brooklyn\, New York\, Jonathan is dedicated to crafting distinctive sculptures and installations tailored for public engagement\, thereby contributing to the dynamic landscape of contemporary art. \nTogether\, Circuladium received the Excellent Award of 2018 Austronesian International Arts Award and the 2021 Hualien Art Award. The Taitung Museum of Art in Taiwan acquired their work in 2018\, and it is permanently on display in Taitung County Cultural Affairs Bureau Library in Taiwan. \n\n\n\n\n  \nTiger Strikes Asteroid\n1329 Willoughby Ave\, #2A\nBrooklyn\, NY 11237 \n(347) 746-8041 \nnewyork@tigerstrikesasteroid.com \nwww.tigerstrikesasteroid.com \n  \nPress Materials\nhttps://circuladium.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Circuladium-Rain-Catcher-PR.pdf\nhttps://circuladium.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Circuladium-Rain-Catcher-PR.docx

It explores the constant process of confirmation and reinforcement of spiritual sublimation\, machinery and flesh\, material and spirit.\nThe space comes to life when the viewers touch the water in the device that triggers sounds to compose a fluid dimension; A dimension that transcends time and space.\nThe usage of medical implants and medicines to repair the flesh is to view the body as a machine. The boundary between robots and humans is fascinating. Are there souls? Is the world we perceived the whole? Do lifeless objects possess powers and thoughts? Can reality be created through rituals\, contacts\, and imaginations? The work intends to interpret and explore the oldest known belief system: Animism in the contemporary artistic approach.\n——————————————————\n▍藝術家簡介 About Artist\n蔡慧盈 Hui-Ying Tsai (台灣 Taiwan)\n蔡慧盈出生於臺灣，長期駐點台北與紐約創作，是位跨領域的多元創作者。 \n\nwww.huiytsai.com\nwww.jonathangrover.com\nwww.circuladium.com\n\nHui-Ying Tsai is a Taiwanese/American interdisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn\, New York. Its focus is on experimenting with technology and materials to create interactive sculptures and installations that reinforce the connection between material and spirit through the human body.\n\n\n\n\nThis exhibition shows several interactive sound pieces in the form of shells that symbolize pure and poetic wonder in the universe. Shells are widely used in ancient rituals and ceremonies to communicate with the unknown across cultures. History and mythology underlie the foundation of spirituality. It is a continuously evolving relationship that reflects on both a physical and spiritual level in everyday life. \nThe artworks embody the metaphysical concepts via sensory interpretation that can transcend language\, culture\, and locality. \nAn interview by Editorial Magazine about all of the pieces exhibited in this show can be found here. \nAbout the Artist\nCirculadium is a new media art collective based in Brooklyn\, formed by Hui-Ying Tsai and Jonathan Grover in 2018. He draws heavily on his upbringing in the Midwest in order to create work that reflects the social climate of his home. To date\, his body of work juxtaposes the real and unreal to tell stories that are as absurd as they are familiar. Often\, his work draws upon his sketchbook practice – diligently observing and documenting his environment with surreal juxtapositions which insinuate that “not everything is quite right here.” His work consists of graphic shapes\, textures\, bold color\, and symbolic iconography. The results are vibrant paintings and murals that are equal parts narrative\, decorative and conceptual.
